DeLand’s First Merchant

This is an extraordinary early document! James Jordan was DeLand's first merchant having come to the area in 1877 and opening a store on the south side of W. Indiana. I have never been able to find any documentation on who built the actual building (but am presuming it was Henry DeLand), however, I did find an early map that showed one building on W. Indiana in 1878. This was the Jordan store and he sold out his goods to George Dreka in 1878. (This was the beginning of the Dreka era, which made DeLand a commercial center.) Then in 1879 Jordan and Lancaster crossed to the north side of W. Indiana and opened another store, and that is the one from the letterhead you see here. Lancaster was a druggist and also DeLand's first postmaster, taking care of the mails in the back of the store.
